1890 fireAs many researchers have discovered, most of the census population schedules for 1890 were severely damaged or later destroyed due to a fire that occurred in the basement of the Commerce Department in Washington, D.C. on January 10, 1921 and the resultant flooding from putting the fire out (Picture courtesy of the National Archives). At the time it was estimated that 25% of the records were destroyed with 50% of the remainder damaged by water, smoke and fire. The remainder of the original schedules, and many other records, were later destroyed in 1934/1935 under Congressional authorization issued in Feb. 1933. A better accounting and history to the 1890 census records can be found here. In the end, only a very small number of fragments have been found.

However, as a substitute to the 1890 census, Schuylkill County had a community census directory (similar to a city directory) for various towns. This directory information included the name of men and women, age, occupation and additional household information. Interestingly, information regarding age and occupation were only recorded for the men, not for the women. That information has been extracted from those records and presented here.
