This page contains an alphabetical listing of those buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schuylkill County, Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. The imposing statuary pictured to the right is situated on the Boczkowski family plot. In the horizon, you can faintly see the Cogeneration Plant transforming anthracite waste to electricity.

The first Lithuanian residents came to the community of Mahanoy City between the years 1873 and 1876 to work in the anthracite coal mines. In 1884, the Reverend Father Lenarkewicz ministered to this immigrant group as they worshiped in Gorman's Hall located at the corner of Linden and Market Streets.

Reverend Peter Ambromaitis was assigned to the community to organize a parish. He received this appointment on August 3, 1888 and commenced his labors immediately. The cornerstone of the church was laid by Archbishop P.J. Ryan on September 30, 1888. The building was not completed until June of 1893 when it was dedicated with formal ceremonies.

Construction of the rectory began in 1893 and was completed the following year. The Reverend S. Pautienius began his rectorship on June 1, 1894. The parish school was erected during his pastorship.

Father Abromaitis returned to the parish in 1910 and was again succeeded by Pautienius in 1911. Other successors included Reverends V. Dais, Henry Valaitis, P, Augustaitis, and P.C. Chesna who began a long run of rectorship on May 1, 1920.
