In 1936, a beetle was a bug, grass grew on the Illinois prairie, and gay meant you were happy. It was a time when fresh milk, eggs, and bread were delivered to your doorstep, coal rattled down the metal chut into your basement, and ice was delivered to your door via horse-drawn wagon. There were 3,484 listings in the 1936 Chicago-area Lithuanian telephone directory, the most popular Lithuanian business was tavern owner, and Cicero was the 'little Lithuania' of Chicago Suburbs.
