Excerpts from Golden Jubilee Book-

St. George School

“Our school can claim the distinction of being the first Lithuanian parochial school in the Middle West. It was founded by Father M. Krauciunas in 1894. The first teacher was a layman, Stanley Dauielowicz, who received $25.00 monthly as his salary. When the number of children began to grow, the Polish Sisters of Nazareth took over the work of teaching in 1897. Later the Lithuanian nuns of this Order established their own branch and became a part of the Franciscan Order.

The school expanded to the point that at times there were approximately 1,000 pupils in school.

In 1923 the Sisters of St. Casimir replaced the Franciscan nuns as teachers and have been here since. In 1939 a high school was begun in the school building, but, because of lack of pupils, it soon was discontinued.

Since 1924 one thouand and ninety four children have completed their primary education here; 1,647 children were prepared by the Sisters for the Sacrament of Confirmation, and 1,574 children received their first Holy Communion.

Aside from the ordinary scholastic work, the chidren get special training in chorus work and have had a school orchestra for a number of years. The director of music, Prof. A.S. Pocius, has been taking care of this branch of education.

The school building is of sturdy struture and contains a large auditorium.”
